The Tour de France is now underway! The riders are on their way from Lille to... Yes, Lille. It will typically be a day for the sprinters so that the first few hours will be fairly quiet. That can occasionally make for some great images, as was the case on the first Saturday of La Grande Boucle. There was plenty of time for a pee break, which many riders took advantage of.
Normally, the first stage of the Tour causes quite a bit of chaos. Of course, the final will be extremely nervous, with the sprinters fighting for the yellow jersey and the GC riders trying to avoid crashes. But even at the start of the day, it can be hectic: there are plenty of riders who want to be in the breakaway of the day, not just for the publicity but also for the polka dot jersey. That's why a big battle for the breakaway was not unthinkable.
However, it didn't happen: five riders rode away immediately at the start, and the peloton immediately gave them space. After a few minutes, Alpecin-Deceuninck and Lidl-Trek took the lead to control the race, but the pace was certainly not high. Nevertheless, Le Grand Départ seemed to have made quite a few riders nervous. When order was restored to the peloton, suddenly, half of the riders were standing at the side of the road.

Pit stop van der Poel, Pogacar and co

Well, half... It could easily have been more. Almost the entire list of participants suddenly stood on the side of the road for a pee break. Tim Merlier, Mathieu van der Poel, Toms Skujins, Tadej Pogacar, Iván Romeo, Tim Wellens... They all took full advantage of the opportunity with both hands to empty their bladders. It made for some striking images. But anyway, the riders will be a few grams lighter now...
