Oscar Riesebeek has been involved in a serious crash in the final stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour. The 32-year-old Dutch rider from Alpecin-Deceuninck wanted to push forward along the side of the road in the final phase of the race, but crashed hard when he tried to merge with the peloton. Riesebeek did not make it to the finish line and was penalized by the jury.
The veteran undoubtedly wanted to play a role in team leader Jasper Philipsen's sprint, but he tried to push forward irresponsibly. He almost reached the front via the curb and wanted to join a duo from INEOS Grenadiers. However, they didn't budge, causing Riesebeek to lose his balance and crash hard to the left.
The video shows that Riesebeek remained on the ground and was injured. The jury showed no mercy and showed him his second yellow card of this round. On day 2, Riesebeek had already received one for the same offense, and on the final day, he was also given a yellow card for using sections that were not part of the course.
It didn't matter much to Riesebeek, as he didn't make it to the finish line of the stage anyway due to the consequences of his fall. At the time of writing, nothing is known about his injuries, but it is definitely a setback for what is to come. The Dutchman is scheduled to compete in the Tour de France, where he will be supporting Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel.
If Riesebeek has indeed received two yellow cards in one race, he will face a seven-day suspension.
