Jasper Philipsen scored a double victory in the
second stage of the
Renewi Tour with his stage win in Ardooie, but the victory by the Belgian rider from Alpecin-Premier Tech wasn’t the story of the day. A massive crash with 67 kilometers to go
claimed many victims, including race leader
Jonathan Milan.
It all happened with an hour and a half of cycling left, when Tobias Bayer (Alpecin-Premier Tech) collided with the rear wheel of the rider in front of him. The Austrian rider from Alpecin-Premier Tech, who was leading the peloton, lost control and crashed after colliding with riders from Pinarello-Q36.5 and Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. They then took about twenty other riders down with them.
We saw Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet Rose Rockets) among the first riders to crash: the sprinter was one of the first to fall, but he was able to get back up and rejoin the peloton. His teammate Matyas Kopecky was also on the ground. Belgian champion Rune Herregodts (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and a rider from Netcompany INEOS ended up in the roadside ditch, while race leader Milan lay on the ground on the far right.
The Italian had initially won the opening stage, but was badly battered. He, too, was eventually able to get back on his feet, but had to say goodbye to his leader’s jersey. He continued riding alongside his teammate Simone Consonni, just ahead of the sweep car. The pair even had to get off their bikes briefly to let the peloton pass on the local circuit in Ardooie. It is not yet known whether they made it to the finish.

Simialr concern for Capiot
Kasper Asgreen (EF Education-EasyPost), Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Intermarché), and Laurence Pithie (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) were also involved in the crash. The New Zealander had to continue the race with a completely torn jersey.
The serious crash also resulted in some riders dropping out. Corbin Strong (NSN) was involved
and couldn’t continue. But Amaury Capiot seemed to be in the worst shape. The Belgian rider from Jayco AlUla lay motionless after the crash, causing concern for his teammate Luke Durbridge. Fortunately, he was able to get back on his feet later, but his race was over: he had to go to the hospital.
