Niklas Behrens of Visma | Lease a Bike will not race again this spring. The German rider, who became U23 world champion in Zurich in 2024, is set to undergo an ablation procedure at the end of this month, a minor intervention intended to resolve heart rhythm issues. Behrens had only recently broken his collarbone during an altitude training camp in Sierra Nevada. Things have therefore not gone Behrens’ way since joining Visma | Lease a Bike at the start of 2025. Last year, he had already suffered a broken collarbone after a crash in the UAE Tour, and he ran into the same injury again in Spain in February.
On top of that injury now comes the ablation procedure, which will keep him sidelined for the coming months. Visma | Lease a Bike stressed that the focus is on a full recovery, with the aim of returning to training and racing later this season. According to the team, it is a routine treatment that has been used successfully in active athletes.

Behrens goes through difficult time
"I’m very grateful to the team and the medical staff for their guidance and support in the last days and weeks. It’s a difficult climb right now, but I will be attacking my recovery with the same focus I bring to every race," Behrens announced in
a press release. "While it’s tough to be out of competition and not able to race with my teammates, I’m committed to the process so I can return even stronger. I can’t wait to get back in the peloton, start pinning on a number again and show the team what I can do,” he concludes.
