Remco Evenepoel flew to yet another world title in time trial on Sunday. The Belgian, who will be moving to Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe this winter, got off to an excellent start at the World Championships in Rwanda. In the end, it was a double celebration, as he received a phone call with good news from home.
“When I see the differences along the way, I think it's safe to say that this was one of my better time trials,” Evenpoel said afterwards at the press conference. “Especially considering the circumstances, with this course and the heat. Together with the time trial in this year's Dauphiné, which was a completely different task.” Then the Belgian beat Pogacar by 48 seconds.
It was mainly Evenepoel's overtaking of Pogacar that will stick in people's minds from the World Time Trial Championships in Rwanda. “I saw him in front of me and wanted to pass him as quickly as possible. Perhaps I went a little over my limit on the cobbled climb due to that. In the end, it didn't matter because the victory is what counts,” Evenepoel said.
"So far, so good," said the Belgian about the World Championships in Kigali so far. "It's pretty hectic, but that's how it is in any big city. Outside the city center, there are also many good roads, and the hills are great for training, so I've been able to enjoy it so far. Hopefully, it will stay that way for another week."

Double celebration for Evenepoel: Oumi graduates

It would eventually turn out to be a double celebration for the three-time world time trial champion. When the Belgian was speaking to VTM Nieuws after the race, his girlfriend, Oumi, suddenly called. Dad Patrick and mom Agna were also on the line. The news they had to share was that Oumi had graduated with a degree in applied economics.
“Double the celebration for you,” said father Patrick. The news came from Evenepoel's wife herself, although his mother Agna briefly thought she was going to become a grandmother. “Oh dear, that's something else... No, no. There's television here, lol,” laughed Evenepoel.
