Belgian former cyclist Ludo Dierckxsens has passed away in his home country. The 60-year-old collapsed during a charity bike ride for Kom op tegen Kanker and fell. Despite resuscitation efforts, he could not be saved. Dierckxsens was known for his ever-present smile.
In 1999, Dierckxsens became Belgian national champion and also won a stage in the Tour de France. Over the years, he became a beloved figure, not just for his achievements, but for his infectious personality. After his career, he was a popular guest on TV programs for exactly that reason.
He passed away on Thursday. "Out of love for cycling, Dierckxsens took part in the 1,000-kilometer ride for Kom op tegen Kanker (organization for cancer research). During the ride, he fell. He was resuscitated, but all help was to no avail," reported Sporza. Dierckxsens was 60 years old.
