There were quite a few crashes in the penultimate stage of the Tour de France. Mauro Schmid (Jayco-AlUla) was among those who hit the asphalt, but in the final, things also went wrong in the leading group. A wet descent caused a nasty crash involving Iván Romeo (Movistar) and Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ). The Spaniard was particularly affected by the crash. He crossed the finish line well behind the pack, with serious injuries to his right side.
The final official climb caused a significant split in the race. Six riders managed to break away: Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Jake Stewart (Israel - Premier Tech), Simone Velasco (XDS-Astana), Frank van den Broek (Picnic PostNL), Grégoire, and Romeo. They threw themselves into the descent together. The Spanish champion wanted to attack there, but cut a corner completely wrong.
Due to excessive speed, he crashed. Grégoire, in second position, was unable to avoid the accident: he seemed to swerve to avoid Romeo, but later slipped. The other riders miraculously managed to stay upright. The Frenchman was able to get up quickly, but Romeo was badly injured and remained on the ground. It didn't look good...
The stage victory was out of reach, but for a moment it even looked like his Tour was over. However, the young warrior got back on his bike and finished well behind the pack. That's when the extent of the damage became clear: Romeo was completely bruised and scraped on his right side, from his shoulder to his thigh. After a check-up, it turned out that he hadn't broken anything, so Romeo is gonna start tomorrow and try to finish the Tour.
