Remco Evenepoel will have a familiar domestique joining him at Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. On Monday, the Austrian-German team announced the transfer of Mattia Cattaneo, who will be joining the Belgian rider from Soudal Quick-Step. With this move, the team continues its strategy of pairing experienced riders with young talent.
“With Cattaneo, Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe secures another strong signing for the new season,” the team said in a statement. “He will be a valuable addition to the team’s ambitions – both in stage races and in demanding one-day classics.”
The 34-year-old Italian has already competed in fourteen Grand Tours in his career, which coincidentally took him exactly fourteen years. “It is precisely this consistency and experience that the team will rely on,” says Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe. “Known as a powerful rider, the Lombard also showcases his strength in time trials and challenging one-day races.”
Cattaneo is the team's fifth signing. Earlier, the Austrian-German formation made the transfer of the year (at least so far) with the arrival of Evenepoel. At the same time, it also managed to poach Gianni Vermeersch from Alpecin-Deceuninck. Furthermore, the talented Callum Thornley and Luke Tuckwell will be transferred from the new Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe Rookies team in the winter.

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe pairs experience with young talent

The move brings an end to Cattaneo's six-year adventure with the Belgian team. The Italian arrived at The Wolfpack in 2020 and won twice for his team. These were two successes in time trials: in the Tour of Luxembourg (2021) and in the Tour of Poland (2023).
For Ralph Denk, CEO of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, it is Cattaneo's experience that is particularly important. “With Mattia, we continue our strategy of pairing our young talents with experienced professionals. Mattia brings race awareness and experience, along with the big engine that provides crucial power for the team – from one-day races to the Grand Tours.”
Cattaneo himself is very pleased with his move. “I’m very happy to be joining Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe and I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and starting to race. I’d like to thank the team for giving me this opportunity. I’ll do my best to support the team leaders, and I’m convinced that my contribution can be valuable for the team.”
