After Magnus Cort Nielsen’s sprint win in stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya, the fast men may get another chance later this week. They will first have to survive several tough climbs, and perhaps some wind as well. Are we heading for another sprint? IDL Procycling takes a closer look. Course stage 3 Volta a Catalunya 2026
Whereas until now we have only had the same start or finish locations as in 2025, that will not be the case on Wednesday.
Stage 3 runs from Mont-roig del Camp to Vila-Seca. Mont-roig del Camp has never before hosted a start or finish, while Vila-Seca last welcomed the race in 2019, when sprinter Phil Bauhaus won there. Another sprint is therefore far from unthinkable.
The stage is just under 160 kilometres long and includes more than 2,200 metres of climbing, but almost all of that elevation gain comes in the first 120 kilometres. The final 40 kilometres are virtually flat. So if the Volta a Catalunya serves up a second sprint after stage 2, Vila-Seca is very much the place where it should happen.
That is, unless the GC teams decide to make things hard on the Alto de la Mussara (10.4 km at 6.6%), Coll de Capafons (4 km at 4.7%) and Coll Roig (5.7 km at 4.2%). Fortunately for the sprinters, the hardest climbs come relatively early in the day, which should at least give them some time to recover before the final run-in.
If the pace is too high on the climbs, this could also become a fine opportunity for attackers or punchier fast finishers. And then there is the wind, which could play a role in the finale in particular. Once the race returns to Mont-roig del Camp with 30 kilometres to go and the climbing is over, there are two exposed stretches in the flat run-in where the bunch could split.
The first danger point comes at 24.4 kilometres from the finish, when the riders turn left at a roundabout onto a long, open road. That section lasts 8.8 kilometres and, with a west-northwesterly wind of force 3 to 4, the conditions could be just right for echelons. Then, with 7 kilometres to go, the route turns left again onto the highway approach to the sprint. The wind has a free run there as well.

Weather stage 3 Volta a Catalunya 2026
Temperatures in Catalonia should once again be very pleasant on Wednesday. The light breeze of the past few days, however, is expected to give way to a stronger wind. Around the middle of the day, it could rise to force 3 to 4, blowing at an angle from behind. That should make things nervous in the bunch, and in the finale there is at least a real possibility of echelons.

Assuming the stage into Vila-Seca does indeed come down to a sprint, attention naturally turns to the fast men on the start list. With this much climbing in the route, though, it certainly helps if a rider can handle the hills well. Dorian Godon can do exactly that. The Frenchman already won stage 1 by taking a long sprint from a reduced group.
Magnus Cort Nielsen also showed this week that he still has his fast legs. The Uno-X rider won stage 2 in impressive style. Riders who would normally also be expected to cope well with a hilly route and still finish quickly are NSN duo Brady Gilmore and Ethan Vernon, although both were absent from the decisive part of stage 2, with Vernon suffering a puncture.

Noa Isidore (Decathlon CMA CGM) and Francesco Busatto (Alpecin-Premier Tech) were anything but disappointments in stage 2. The two young riders both surprisingly finished on the podium and proved they have serious speed. The question is whether they can do it again in a more traditional flat sprint, and whether they would survive any echelons if the wind really bites. Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) also makes the list.
If the pace on the climbs is manageable enough, a few more sprinters could come into play for a top result. Think of Alberto Dainese (Soudal Quick-Step), Noah Hobbs (EF Education-EasyPost), Mathieu Kockelmann (Lotto-Intermarché), Thomas Guillermo Silva (XDS Astana) and, under normal circumstances, Sam Bennett (Pinarello Q36.5). The Irishman, however, was dropped very early in stage 2 on the way to Banyoles.
