Thibau Nys gave an update on his recovery on Thursday evening during Vive le Vélo, Leve de Ronde. The young Belgian from Lidl-Trek underwent surgery in March for what is commonly known as “cyclist’s knee.” So how is Nys doing now, and when can we expect to see him back in action? The man himself offered some clarity Nys had major ambitions for his road campaign, especially after making such a strong impression in 2025 during his first full spring classics campaign. His cyclo-cross winter had also gone well, capped by a bronze medal at the World Championships in Hulst.
After that, Nys eased off for a while and enjoyed some time away from racing. But when he was due to resume training, a familiar knee issue quickly returned. The decision was therefore made to deal with the nagging pain once and for all.

Thibau Nys still facing months on the sidelines
The timing could hardly have been worse. As Nys explained, he had not even been back on the bike in the days leading up to the Tour of Flanders. “It was a minor procedure, but it came at the worst possible time of the year, with pretty major consequences.”
He was also able to give an update on his revised race programme. No Classics, no Giro d’Italia, and it now looks like we will not see him racing again until the summer. “I realize there are worse things in the world, but mentally it is tough.”

Nys only expecting a return in summer
According to Nys himself, it has been difficult to watch his condition almost literally disappear from his body. “I’m a bit lost at home. Every day you can see the muscles in my leg disappearing like snow in the sun. It’s mentally tough. It’s a bit depressing and confronting.”
“But there is light at the end of the tunnel,” Nys also said, because the bike is finally coming back into view. “I think it’s too early to make statements about that. In the very best-case scenario, I might quietly be allowed to start riding again next week. Then the question is when I’ll be able to handle full training load again.”
“I don’t know, I’m not going to make any promises. I hope to start racing again sometime in June or July.”
