The fact that Tadej Pogacar is the most dominant cyclist in the current peloton may not be particularly beneficial to his status. Many riders have expressed their frustration, but beyond that, the Slovenian is a well-liked figure in the peloton. It's not just cyclists who are friends with the world champion: he also has famous friends outside the cycling world.
Pogacar, who lives in Monaco, has many neighbors who are top athletes. Australian Michael Matthews, for example, is one of his most frequent training partners and also a valuable friend. But the Slovenian is also very popular in the world of Formula 1. Spanish racing driver Carlos Sainz talks to COPE about his friendship with the Slovenian powerhouse.
The 31-year-old Sainz, who has been racing for Williams in the top racing class since this year, has built up a wonderful relationship with Pogacar in a short time. "Of those who now live in Monaco, he is one of my closest friends, the one I see most often. We often go out to eat together, and we go cycling... Well, as I always say, we don't really go cycling, he's the one who comes with me, because he's on an entirely different level!‘

Sainz on Pogacar: "It's incredible that I can call him my friend"

The Spaniard and the Slovenian have more in common than one might think: for example, they are both often far from home to practice their sport. They share many similarities. “We go out for coffee together, eat focaccia, catch up, and talk about our respective sports. He is a big fan of mine and of Formula 1. We really have a great time together.”
Sainz, who recently finished third in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, praises the European and world champion. "I admire him because he is a very modest and approachable person. He is a very simple man. He is one of the best athletes I have ever met, and it is incredible that I can call him my friend today."
