A Slovenian in the yellow jersey, an Eritrean in the points jersey, an Ecuadorian in the polka dot jersey, and a Belgian in the white jersey of the Tour de France. Had someone predicted this about ten years ago, they would likely be a millionaire now. In particular, Biniam Girmay and Richard Carapaz made history in the 2024 edition.
"I can't find the words," said the African from Intermarché-Wanty. "I didn't come to this Tour de France aiming to win the green jersey, but simply to show my abilities. You could say I've achieved that. I'm grateful to everyone who helped me finish this Tour de France with the green jersey. When I woke up, I thanked God for this unforgettable day. I am overwhelmed with emotions."
"My journey in this Tour is a new chapter in cycling history, for us Eritreans and Africans," Girmay exclaimed. "We have been cycling for a long time, but winning stages and a green jersey is now achievable. That's something special. I want to thank my compatriots and everyone who has supported me: my family, my team, our sponsors, the supporters on the roadside and behind their screens. Thank you," said the winner of the points jersey.
Carapaz is the first Ecuadorian to win a jersey in the Tour. "It's been a tough race, and my legs are very sore. I'm tired, but also incredibly happy. Ultimately, it's been a beautiful race. When we started in Italy, I had some doubts due to my crash in the Tour de Suisse. I wasn't in good shape, but I got better as the race went on."
"That's why this polka dot jersey is so special to me," said the climber, who extensively thanked his team, EF Education-EasyPost. "We've been very clear about our objectives and have really approached them as a team. My results are for the entire team," he concluded.
