Italy also mourned the tragic passing of Daisy Gesink. The wife of former professional cyclist Robert Gesink died this week after a short illness, which was announced to the public on Saturday evening. The Giro d'Italia peloton held a minute's silence in Rome, with Visma | Lease a Bike in the front row. Gesink posted a message on Instagram on Saturday announcing the death of his wife. "You will live in our hearts forever. Thank you for all the love you gave us, for your beautiful smile that lit up every room. It breaks my heart that we have to go on without you, but above all, I’m so proud to be your husband."
Wout van Aert said before the final stage that the Visma | Lease a Bike riders were already
aware of the news. "We had already heard the news from Robert on Friday. We knew what was going on, but no one expected Daisy to pass away so quickly. It's very difficult to keep your mind on the race. It's always in the back of your mind. Sometimes life is very unfair," said the Belgian rider.

At the start of the final stage of the Tour of Italy, the Visma | Lease a Bike riders were placed in the front row for a minute's silence, together with Picnic PostNL rider
Gijs Leemreize, Daisy's nephew. The Visma | Lease a Bike riders wore pink jerseys with the words "our thoughts are with Daisy."
Gesink himself dedicated his Sunday morning bike ride to his late wife. The Dutchman received support from a large part of the cycling world.
