Caja Rural's Guardeña remains in poor condition after undergoing surgery six months ago

Caja Rural - Seguros RGA has provided an update on Jaume Guardeño. Earlier this year, the young Spaniard suffered a horrific crash during a training ride and was in critical condition. Months after the accident, the Spanish team has provided more information about the condition of the 23-year-old climber from Altea.

Guardeño turned pro in 2024 with Caja Rural - Seguros RGA and showcased his talents primarily in junior races. In 2025, he took a significant step forward and, following excellent results, made his debut in the Vuelta a España. There, the 22-year-old talent showed his best side: he climbed strongly and ultimately finished 14th in the overall standings.

It was a wonderful step forward, but the young climber’s ceiling seemed very high. However, all his ambitions came to an abrupt end. In late March of this year, he was involved in an accident during training. He was struck by a car and was in critical condition. He was hospitalized with severe head injuries and fought for his life for two months.

He was transferred to the Guttmann Clinic, which specialises in neurorehabilitation and the treatment of severe neurological disorders. But since May, there had been no further updates on Guardeño’s condition. His team made its debut in the Tour de France and honored him with a special race jersey during the race.

Caja Rural - Seguros RGA has since shared another update. They report that he has undergone surgery. “Jaume Guardeño underwent successful surgery performed by Dr. Andreu Gabarros Canals, a renowned neurosurgeon from Barcelona, to continue his recovery process,” the organization stated via X. “He has been transferred back to the Guttmann Clinic, where the rehabilitation team remains closely involved in his neurorehabilitation process.”

The team hasn't said a word about what kind of procedure was performed. In any case, there seems to be little progress in the situation. “We thank the medical teams for the tremendous work they are doing, and at Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, we continue to offer our full support and solidarity to Jaume, as well as to his family and loved ones, and stand by them during this difficult time.”
