The two biggest names to crash in the chaotic third stage of the Tour de France were Jasper Philipsen and Remco Evenepoel. For the Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter, it was immediately game over, while his compatriot from Soudal Quick-Step suffered no major consequences. However, many more riders went down on Monday, so IDLProCycling.com is keeping track in this medical bulletin! Philipsen crashed with 60 kilometers to go,
suffering a displaced collarbone fracture, at least one broken rib, and numerous deep abrasions. A serious crash that meant the end of his Tour. His fellow Belgian, Evenepoel, crashed three kilometers from the finish. The Soudal Quick-Step leader still finished the stage, and his injuries
appear to be relatively minor, according to his team.
Evenepoel went down after a crash in front of him. The main victims there were Jordi Meeus and Laurence Pithie. Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe shared an update on
X late Monday night about both riders’ conditions. “After an initial check, no fractures or serious injuries were found for Jordi or Laurence. They are expected to start tomorrow (Tuesday, ed.), but we’ll monitor how they feel after a night’s rest.”
INEOS Grenadiers had plans for
Connor Swift on Monday, but the Brit crashed in the same incident. However, he seems to have escaped serious injury. “It was a nasty crash,” Zak Dempster shared on
X. “Hopefully everyone came out of it okay. Connor is fine. A bit sore, but all good.” Thymen Arensman and Geraint Thomas also appeared to be involved but did not go down.

Brutal crash just before the finish - Miraculously nobody forced to quit
At 150 meters from the finish, things went wrong again. Several riders were
brutally slammed into the barriers. Miraculously, everyone involved still crossed the line, but of course the damage was still significant. Groupama-FDJ sprinter Paul Penhoët had to walk his bike over the line. “He crashed a few hundred meters from the finish. Even though he didn’t sustain serious injuries, he couldn’t contest the sprint,” the French team
said in a press release.
Emilien Jeannière rolled across the line heavily bloodied. The Frenchman from TotalEnergies was involved in the same crash and slammed into the barriers with force. “He was treated quickly by doctors and will return to the hotel after further checks. He has a head wound that doesn’t appear serious, bruising around his shoulders, and a few stitched wounds. A new evaluation will be made Tuesday morning by the medical staff,” TotalEnergies shared on
X.
Davide Ballerini was also involved in the crash. The Italian from XDS Astana was later penalized by the jury for his role in the incident. “I can tell you he’s in a lot of pain,”
said team director Mark Renshaw after the stage. “To go over the handlebars at 70 kilometers per hour… we’ll wait and see what the night brings.”
Finally,
Bryan Coquard also crashed in the process. The Frenchman had an emotional day overall, he
was in tears after the stage while talking about his role in Philipsen’s crash. “He has a burn across his entire left side, multiple superficial wounds and abrasions,” read a team statement. “Bryan is also complaining about pain near his shoulder blade, but initial observations by the team doctor do not indicate a fracture. The staff will monitor Bryan’s injuries closely on Monday evening and Tuesday morning.”
