The presence of Israel-Premier Tech in the Vuelta a España peloton has been keeping tensions high in the Spanish race for days. The bomb exploded in the eleventh stage in and around Bilbao, which ultimately resulted in no stage winner. But there are also aftershocks, as evidenced by a dispute between Visma | Lease a Bike rider Matteo Jorgenson and Israel-Premier Tech's sports director Daryl Impey.
From the outset, Israel-Premier Tech has taken a stand and has no intention of changing it. “People can say what they want, but we're going to continue to Madrid. Simple. We try to focus on what we are: a cycling team,” said South African Impey, himself a former rider and now sports director.
“We actually feel a lot of support. And the riders from the other teams? Some support us, others don't... In the CPA WhatsApp group, Matteo Jorgenson is the most vocal. Maybe you should ask him what he thinks about it,” Impey said at FloBikes, taking a jab at the American rider from Visma | Lease a Bike.

Jorgenson displeased: "Inappropriate to disclose publicly"

“We are a sports team and we don’t mix it up with politics, but for him it has apparently come to that,” Impey continues. “He's basically saying we should leave the other riders behind. Is he perhaps the king of the Vuelta? Maybe he can add something to that,” he told reporter Gregor Brown, who then turned to Jorgenson.
The rider from the Dutch team was not happy with Impey's comments. "He's talking about messages in a private group app among riders. I think it's inappropriate to make that public in the media. That clearly shows what position he takes." Jorgenson kept his response short but powerful.
“I have little else to say about it, and I have already shared my opinion when it was relevant,” concluded the domestique of the red jersey, Jonas Vingegaard.
