Cofidis announced last week the arrival of Alex Kirsch. The Luxembourg rider is the second most senior member of Lidl-Trek's spring squad to leave the team after Jasper Stuyven. On Instagram, Kirsch said goodbye to the German-American team after seven years, and in particular to his regular team leader, Mads Pedersen.
“After 7 unforgettable years with Lidl-Trek, it’s time to turn the page and start a new chapter,” said the lead-out man. "I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Trek for giving me the chance to grow as a rider and as a person. To my teammates — for all the unforgettable moments we shared. And to the staff — for making it possible to perform at the highest level."
“One of the most special parts has definitely been my relationship with Mads Pedersen and Mattias Reck,” he said, addressing his team leader and trainer. “We’ve shared so many battles, so many highs, and a few lows too. From winning stages in every Grand Tour to countless victories and standing on the podium of Monuments — I’ve learned a lot, and I’m proud of what we achieved together. It’s been a journey I’ll never forget.”

Kirsch teams up with Fretin

“Today, I’m happy to share that I’ve signed a 3-year deal with Cofidis. I’m excited to bring my experience in the sprints and as a road captain to support the team’s ambitions, and to work closely with Milan Fretin as we chase the same goals together,” said the 33-year-old rider, who will be working with the up-and-coming Belgian sprinter.
“I’d also like to thank Cedric Vasseur for the trust and confidence. I’m really motivated to take on this new role and give my best. I’m also looking forward to seeing where my personal limits lie in the Classics,” said Kirsch, who explained more about his move on his new team's website.

Kirsch gets more freedom in Flemish classics

“There are several reasons behind my decision. First of all, I am very happy to be one of the lead-out men for Fretin, where I can use my experience to position him well and help us perform well in the sprints,” he said. “In addition, I know that I will have a little more freedom in the Flemish classics, races that are close to my heart.”
“I am a rider with stamina, a puncher, and during the race, I always try to think about how I can have a positive impact on the team. Within Lidl-Trek, we have grown gradually with riders such as Pedersen, Jasper Stuyven, and me,” he says. “I think I can use my experience to help Cofidis grow further. I am thrilled to be back with Thierry Marchal, who helped me enormously at the start of my career.”

Cofidis pleased with arrival of Kirsch

Vasseur is also delighted with the new addition. “Alex is an experienced rider who will help the team grow thanks to his athletic and human qualities. Alex is very familiar with the role of leadout. He has raced at the highest level in recent years and has served the interests of riders such as Pedersen.”
“His arrival significantly strengthens our group of sprinters and classics riders. I am convinced that the collaboration with Fretin will be a success and that we will be better equipped to take on other sprint teams,” said the Frenchman. “Moreover, I am convinced that Alex, who has always put himself at the service of his leaders, will seize his opportunity in the Flemish classics. At Cofidis, he will have the freedom to shine.”
