Mathieu van der Poel's athletic fitness meter has been ticking over nicely again in recent days. The Dutchman from Alpecin-Deceuninck has resumed training after his vacation in the United States and has already shared some photos of himself running and cycling on the Spanish coast. On Monday, his buddy Freddy Ovett joined him again.
In recent days, VDP has mainly been out and about with David Dekker and Laurens Vanthoor, and on Monday, Ovett was back too. From Dénia, the Aussie completed a tough 191-kilometer training session at 31.5 kilometers per hour. Or, as Van der Poel put it in the comments: “Nice little sixer in the mixer.”
The Dutchman greeted his cycling buddy on social media with the words BAFM ("brother from another mother"), while also sharing snapshots of the ride through the Spanish hills under an enviable sun—quite a contrast to the rainy conditions in the Low Countries on Monday.

Date of Van der Poel's return still unknown

For the time being, it is unclear when Van der Poel will return to competition. Team boss Christoph Roodhooft gave a brief update on Sporza on Saturday. ‘“Mathieu has had a good holiday, that's for sure. He is now training for his cyclo-cross campaign. We plan to announce his program at the presentation of the World Championships in Hulst, so that will be revealed then.”
We will know more in just over a month!
