The Vuelta a España has faced yet another protest-related incident. During Stage 15 on Sunday, things went wrong again when a demonstrator attempted to run onto the road from the forest. Riders swerving to avoid the protester led to a crash, though fortunately, everyone was able to continue. Tensions have been simmering in the Vuelta for a while now. In Stage 11, no winner was even crowned in Bilbao due to a large protest at the finish line, which compromised rider safety. That incident sparked widespread reactions and reignited debates around the participation of Israel-Premier Tech, adding more twists to the controversy.
But things flared up again on Sunday. A large chase group was pursuing breakaway riders Jay Vine and Louis Vervaeke when they were startled by a protester who ran out onto the course from the woods. The individual entered the road, forcing several riders to swerve, causing a crash. Romo was the first to hit the ground, and another rider went down shortly after.
