It was an unusual sight on Tuesday during the time trial in the Giro d’Italia. Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar) started the race against the clock with his cooling vest still on. In hindsight, the Italian could laugh about the mistake—especially since he still managed a very solid time trial wearing it.

Filippo Ganna had already set an absolute blistering time, but fellow Italian Milesi can also perform impressively against the clock. That said, he probably usually rides time trials without a cooling vest. On Tuesday, he forgot to remove it, but afterward, he appeared calmly in front of Eurosport cameras.
"I forgot to take off my cooling vest," the Italian began with a smile. "When I started, I realized I couldn’t take it off anymore. I noticed it right at the start, but by then it was too late. From that moment, I just had to ride my pace and see how it went."

Despite the mishap, his performance was quite good. Milesi clocked the seventh-fastest time at that moment, 2 minutes and 40 seconds behind Ganna. "It would have gone better without the cooling vest, so that’s a lesson to take with me. We’ll try again in the next stages. The vest is definitely not cold anymore," he said, still laughing about it.
A similar incident once happened to Geraint Thomas during the opening time trial of the 2022 Tour de France in Copenhagen. "I had no idea back then, haha," Milesi added, still laughing.
