Remco Evenepoel was forced to let the peloton go early in the first mountain stage of the Tour de France. The leader of Soudal Quick-Step was dropped eight kilometers from the top of the Col du Soulor, the first climb of this stage, and decided to ride to the top at his own pace.
Visma | Lease a Bike put the pressure on from the foot of the Soulor, which immediately claimed victims in the scorching heat of the Pyrenees. Evenepoel was the first big name in the peloton to be dropped, at a point when there were still around thirty riders in the group of favorites.
His domestique Valentin Paret-Peintre had already been dropped at that point, while Ilan Van Wilder was still trying to do what he could for his leader. Evenepoel lost ground fairly quickly and rode up at his own pace, but he even struggled to keep up with his domestique.
