Danny van Poppel has left the Tour de France. The 31-year-old Dutch rider from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe would normally have been able to make it to Paris, but his family informed him that Van Poppel junior could no longer wait. As a new father, he therefore decided to withdraw.
“I'm leaving the Tour de France, but it's good news,” Van Poppel begins a video from the team. “I became a father a few hours ago, so I'm looking forward to going home. But it is also sad to leave the team because we were doing great. Good luck, guys. See you soon!”

Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe is fighting hard for a podium place in Paris. Behind the unbeatable Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, Florian Lipowitz is in third place. However, Primoz Roglic has also climbed to fifth place and is still in contention for a top spot. This will have to be achieved without Van Poppel, who is on his way to see his newborn daughter.
