Just after realizing he had won the Giro d'Italia 2023, for the first time in a good while, we saw an emotional Primoz Roglic. However, a mere hour later, during the press conference, the Slovenian was cool enough to brush off most of the questions. First question: to what extent did the crash with
Tao Geoghegan Hart disrupt your performance, especially on the Monte Bondone last Tuesday? "That was already five days after my crash. I did struggle afterwards and was still in pain, but every day it got better. Now I had the legs, so I was able to achieve what I wanted."
"The first crash in stage five was not a big deal, but the second one was quite rough," Roglic explained. "I lost quite a bit of skin there, but it also had an impact on my hip. It was very painful, but in the end, I kept on fighting. The past few days were already going well, but now it's even better."
"I knew that this time trial would be decisive. In part based on my experiences from 2020. To win in front of this crowd is something I will never forget," said the Slovenian. "La Planche des Belles Filles didn't cross my mind, but I got some free rest due to that incident with my bike. I'm not a mechanic, but I managed to handle it."
Roglic thanks teammates and fans, but not thinking of celebrating just yet
Roglic also had some words of gratitude for his teammates. "In cycling, you're just one of the eight, but we already had trouble getting eight to the start. And now we're all still here! We are a family, and it's beautiful to see. I spend the whole year with many of those guys, and it's very emotional for all of us."
He also thanked the Slovenian fans once again. "There are no words for it, I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes. The fact that so many of them came to support me is incredible for me. The fact that I am that person they support gives me a lot of satisfaction, so I couldn't do anything other than give it my all."
Although there was already plenty of reason to celebrate, Roglic wasn't thinking about that just yet. "I don't know how I will celebrate yet; we still have to finish in Rome. After that, I will think about celebrating."
