Rohan Dennis received a suspended prison sentence for causing the death of his wife, Melissa Hoskins, in 2023. The former cyclist for INEOS Grenadiers and Visma | Lease a Bike, among others, was facing a lengthy prison sentence, but the judge decided otherwise. Dennis had already pleaded guilty in the case. The former world time trial champion was arrested on December 30, 2023, after hitting Hoskins outside their home in Adelaide. His wife died in the accident. Dennis was charged with dangerous driving, reckless driving, and endangering a human life, resulting in death. Those charges were dropped if Dennis pleaded guilty to “an aggravated charge of creating a risk of harm through recklessness.”
Even Hoskins' mother gave a victim statement in which she said she believed her son-in-law did not act deliberately to injure his wife. "Melissa is the best thing that ever happened to you," she told the former cyclist. "You loved her, and I know you would never intentionally hurt her. I think this is a tragic accident, which should never have happened,"
she said.

Rohan Dennis hears sentence
The judge imposed a suspended prison sentence of 16 months and 28 days, with a two-year probation period. Ten months were deducted because Dennis had already pleaded guilty. However, according to the
NOS, he lost his driving license for five years for 'committing an act that was likely to cause harm.'
This marks the end of a family tragedy in court more than a year after it happened. Hoskins was also a professional cyclist, mainly on the track, for many years. In 2015, she became world champion in the team pursuit with Australia and retired as a professional in 2017. Dennis and Hoskins got married in 2018 and had two children. A domestic dispute over kitchen cabinets ultimately led Dennis to leave the house and get into his car.
