The final stage of Tirreno-Adriatico ended in chaos for the sprinters after a late crash involving Jasper Philipsen and Paul Magnier. Fortunately for both riders, the initial medical update appears positive, according to Alpecin-Premier Tech team manager Christoph Roodhooft.

The crash happened inside the final kilometres of the stage, just as the sprinters were preparing for the expected bunch sprint. Philipsen and Magnier became entangled when their handlebars hooked together, sending both riders to the ground. As a result, Philipsen never had the chance to contest the sprint.
Despite the heavy fall, the early indications suggest the damage is limited. “Everything is OK with Jasper,” Roodhooft said shortly after the finish, offering reassurance following the incident.

Roodhooft Provides Positive Update on Philipsen

Philipsen was back on his feet quickly after his crash, though the Belgian was visibly frustrated. The Alpecin sprinter’s quick recovery already suggested the crash had no serious consequences, but Christoph Roodhooft also provided a positive update afterward to the Belgian outlet HLN.
“It’s a shame, but otherwise everything seems fine. Jasper is okay,” said the team manager, who heard from his team leader what had happened. “I wasn’t there, but Jasper says that Magnier actually came in too late. Their handlebars got caught on each other. It’s especially unfortunate that this happened three kilometers from the finish.”

Magnier’s crash also appears to have caused no serious complications

Magnier, who according to Philipsen was at fault for the crash, remained on the asphalt for a longer period. We therefore had to wait for a medical update from his team. A preliminary report was later posted on the Soudal Quick-Step website, indicating that the Frenchman had also escaped the crash without serious injury.
“After the stage, Magnier was immediately examined by our medical staff. They were able to rule out serious injuries,” the team wrote in a press release. “However, Paul did sustain a bruise to his lower back and a graze on his knee in the crash.” The Belgian team notes that Magnier’s medical condition will continue to be monitored for the time being.
