Joshua Tarling lived up to the hype today in Tirana. The young Brit from INEOS Grenadiers had a rough day yesterday, but it turned out to be no indication of what was coming. After setting only the fifth-fastest time at the intermediate check, he made up ground in the final section, securing his first-ever grand tour stage win. He reacted with pure joy in the flash interview afterward.
With this victory, Tarling becomes the youngest rider ever to win a time trial in the Giro dโ€™Italia. Even he could barely believe it: โ€œItโ€™s unbelievable, Iโ€™m so incredibly happy. The wait was awful, I really hope I never have to do that again, haha.โ€
โ€œFor just thirteen kilometers, it felt like an incredibly long day,โ€ the 21-year-old said with a grin. โ€œThere were so many big names who could have won this time trial, Wout, Mads, and of course Primoz. I have to admit, Primoz really scared me. It was a super stressful day.โ€

Tarling extremely proud of first grand tour victory

Tarling looks back on his time trial with a strong sense of satisfaction. โ€œIโ€™m really happy with my performance. The first part went really well and I had it under control. The climb was really tough, and the final section wasnโ€™t easy either. It was harder than during recon, especially that last part, it really hurt.โ€
Because the INEOS Grenadiers rider didnโ€™t finish in the front group yesterday, he missed out on taking the leaderโ€™s jersey. Still, he has no regrets. โ€œI gave it everything yesterday, so Iโ€™m at peace with not getting the pink jersey. Iโ€™m mainly just incredibly proud of this win.โ€
