Visma | Lease a Bike shuts down wild rumours about Jonas Vingegaard: 'That's not true at all'

Visma | Lease a Bike has denied wild rumours from Italy about a surprising end to Jonas Vingegaard’s season in an interview with TV2. In August, the team announced that the Danish team leader would no longer be racing in 2026, and that decision remains unchanged.

Vingegaard’s year came to an abrupt end when he crashed at a roundabout during Stage 15 of the Tour de France and broke his collarbone. Visma | Lease a Bike made the decision in mid-August to give Vingegaard some well-deserved rest after a long season.

The team leader, in fact, rode four Grand Tours in the span of a single year—something people seem to easily forget. He finished second in the 2025 Tour de France, then won the Vuelta a España, and this year rode the Giro d'Italia and 15 stages of the Tour.

This meant Vingegaard competed in 94 race days from the 2025 Tour to the 2026 Tour—significantly more than stage racers such as Tadej Pogacar, Isaac del Toro, Remco Evenepoel, and Paul Seixas. So his decision to retire in 2026 was not only due to the crash in the Tour, but also to allow himself some extra rest.

In Italy, people had had enough of all the stories surrounding Vingegaard. Cycling Time reported a rumor suggesting that the Dane might still compete in the 2026 European Cycling Championships in Slovenia and the Tour of Lombardy after all.

"That's not true at all," Visma | Lease a Bike emphasised on the Danish network TV2. We should take the smaller Italian media outlets a bit less seriously anyway, and now it turns out why. “Visma has now firmly distanced itself from the Italian rumours and confirmed that Vingegaard will not be racing again this year.”

So, nothing new to report, given that Vingegaard will be preparing for 2027 after a period of rest. He assured everyone that he will continue cycling, in case anyone had any doubts.
