the Belgian certainly has more to give
Wout van Aert's cyclocross schedule:
Unlike Mathieu van der Poel, van Aert has never been secretive about his cyclocross ambitions for this winter. In recent years, the Belgian has raced less and less in cyclocross, sometimes driven by his ambitions on the road and sometimes due to injuries. For the 2026/2027 season, however, we can expect van Aert to be back in cyclocross as usual.

His World Championship ambitions aren’t exactly a secret this time around, either. Van Aert ended up racing the 2025 World Championships at the last minute and didn’t compete last year. He does plan to make an appearance in Ostend at the end of January. “I’m obviously going to race in a few cyclocross events and can’t wait to get started. I’m really, really looking forward to it,” he said enthusiastically.

Wout van Aert's road racing calendar:
The road racing calendar will also hold few secrets for Van Aert, who, as a Flemish rider and classics specialist, has made the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix duo his goal throughout his entire career. For a long time, it seemed like it wouldn’t happen, but in 2026, victory on the cobbles of Roubaix suddenly came his way. It was, without a doubt, the greatest victory of his career.

The fact that Van Aert was unable to ride the Tour de France becasue of an elbow injury seemed to bother him hardly at all. Van Aert appeared liberated and proved it with incredibly strong legs in the Vuelta a España. He won two stages and was at the center of Matthew Brennan’s five-stage winning streak. He was once again somewhat reminiscent of the Van Aert from 2022, when he played a leading role in virtually every stage of the Tour.
There is one major title missing from Wout's list of achievements:
With that mindset, Van Aert and Visma | Lease a Bike will work toward 2027, knowing that there is truly just one major title missing from the team leader’s list of achievements: the Tour of Flanders. In a world with Tadej Pogačar and van der Poel, however, van Aert also knows: “In a way, I didn’t expect to pull it off this year either. That teaches me that I always have to keep trying.”
And that makes van Aert a formidable threat, even upon his likely return to the Tour de France this summer. Especially now that the European Championships (sprinters race) and World Championships (climbers race) don’t seem to be made for hime. “There are riders who have better odds, but there are also very few riders who get opportunities like the ones I do. That opportunity could come at any time, and when it does, I have to be ready. That goes for the Tour of Flanders, too.”
Van Aert still has plenty of time to give it another shot, because aside from the Tour of Flanders, he’s actually won every major classic at least once. The World Championships are still missing from his resume, as are the European Championships. But given the courses in 2027, those seem like goals for later...

Wout van Aert won Paris-Roubaix—can he still win the Tour of Flanders?
