The sixteenth stage of the Giro d'Italia is underway, but INEOS Grenadiers has already had its share of bad luck. Thymen Arensman was hit in the opening phase, after which his teammate Josh Tarling dropped out of the leading group. In the pouring rain, he crashed and hit a guardrail hard. As a result, the Brit was forced to abandon the race. Arensman's crash happened in the very early stages of the race. The riders were fully engaged in the battle for the day's breakaway. From Piazzola sul Brenta, they were unable to get away. Gianmarco Garofoli (Soudal Quick-Step) was one of the riders who tried to break away, but suddenly, his rear wheel slipped away. He crashed over the handlebars and landed in the peloton, but miraculously, most riders managed to avoid him.
However, the chaos behind the crash caused further crashes. Arensman was also a victim of this. He could not avoid the riders braking in front of him, so he went
down on the asphalt. The INEOS climber was very unhappy but seemed to have avoided serious injury. He got back on his bike after putting his chain back on. The Dutchman, ninth in the GC, is back in the peloton.

Tarling crashes and abandons the race
His teammate Josh Tarling managed to break away after a while, with Wout van Aert among others. The seven breakaway riders had a 40-second lead, and things were looking good. But on a roundabout, the time trialist slipped and crashed into the barriers at high speed. It immediately looked more serious than Arensmen's crash. It was clear that the 21-year-old rider was in a lot of pain, and he remained on the ground for a long time. The doctors were quickly on the scene, but soon the announcement came: he had to abandon the race. Tarling was unable to continue and had to leave the Giro d'Italia. He is now on his way to the hospital.
