While major rival Tadej Pogacar is donning the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia, the Visma | Lease a Bike team are preparing for the Tour de France. On Monday, they scouted the gravel stage around Troyes that will be part of the Tour, and soon after, they headed to altitude to prepare for the French cycling race.

"Meanwhile in Troyes: scouting the gravel stage in the Tour," Visma | Lease a Bike posted on social media. Matteo Jorgenson, one of the five riders present, also shared some images of the reconnaissance on his page. The American had recently traveled back to his homeland after the spring season but has now returned to European soil.

Also present were Steven Kruijswijk, Dylan van Baarle, Tiesj Benoot and Sepp Kuss. Intended team leader Jonas Vingegaard, of course, was not there as he is still recovering from his fall in the Tour of the Basque Country. Wout van Aert, who might ride the Tour after missing the Giro, was also not present. Jan Tratnik and Christophe Laporte are currently riding the Giro d'Italia and are normally also slated for the Tour, although we have seen in recent weeks how quickly things can change.

Visma | Lease a Bike team also encounters Evenepoel in Sierra Nevada

The quintet covered 115 kilometers on the gravel roads in and around Troyes, which will be crucial to the ninth stage of the Tour de France. It was certainly a busy day for the men, who boarded a plane to Spain right after their ride.

There, they will spend three weeks at a high-altitude camp in the Sierra Nevada, where they might just encounter a major competitor: Remco Evenepoel, after his crash in the Basque Country, has also arrived on Spanish soil and is preparing for the Tour de France there.
