It has not been the luckiest Giro d’Italia so far for
Giulio Ciccone, and that was once again clear to see on Tuesday during stage 16. After a string of gestures towards fellow riders, a
Lidl-Trek soigneur also felt his frustration: Ciccone angrily threw away the bottle he had been handed.
Ciccone attacked again during
stage 16, but it did not come easily. The Italian from Lidl-Trek had already had to sacrifice his flatland helpers — the sprint train with Jonathan Milan, Max Walscheid and Simone Consonni — early in the stage.
He could make the difference in the mountains, but, as earlier in the race, a few team-mates also got a dressing-down for not helping enough. One of them was Jardi Christiaan van der Lee, who had been singled out by Ciccone in the mountains classification battle.
The peloton — with Visma | Lease a Bike on the front — again gave the breakaway very little room, and that frustrated the climber. A Lidl-Trek soigneur, who was handing Ciccone his supplies, also found that out the hard way. The Italian
looked at what he had been given and then angrily threw it away, as shown in the footage below.
