In the fourteenth stage of the Tour de France, there was no stopping Tadej Pogacar, not even when an idiot tried to make life difficult for him on the final climb. A man on the sidelines threw the contents of a bag of potato chips in the face of the yellow jersey wearer, but thankfully, Pogacar was not thrown off his game. Jonas Vingegaard encountered the same lunatic.
Cycling fans in the peloton have been the subject of discussion in 2024 more often than we'd like. Mathieu van der Poel was already cursed at and pelted with urine during the Tour of Flanders, and the world champion even had a woman try to throw a cap into his wheel of in Paris-Roubaix.
On Saturday, Pogacar and Vingegaard were the victims of similar idiotic acts. The race leader was riding solo up front when he got a large amount of chips thrown in his face. Pogacar just shook his head and stoically continued on. Moments later, the same man with glasses threw chips in the face of Vingegaard. On X, several cycling followers immediately called for the man to be tracked down and punished, as was the woman who harassed Van der Poel in Paris-Roubaix, and who was subjected to a witch hunt. CPA Chairman Adam Hansen has already announced legal steps via his X account. "We will happily take action against the person who did this. This is disrespectful and will not be tolerated."
Notably, in the final phase of the fourteenth Tour stage, the road was not blocked off with barriers for a long time. Only in the absolute finale were the riders able to exert themselves without fans running alongside them, screaming in their ears, and other such antics... Another instance that is making the ASO look bad, as the Tour organization also received criticism over the crash of Primoz Roglic and the huge crowds without any protection at the buses.
