🎥 Mathieu van der Poel sparks debate to resolve dilemma, cycling world offers advice

Last week, Mathieu van der Poel finally announced his schedule for the upcoming cycling summer. The Dutchman will focus on the Tour de France and the road race at the Olympic Games, but which shorts should he wear at the start? He asked his followers on Instagram, which led to some fun responses.

From Spain, Van der Poel posted a compilation video of himself cycling in two different pairs of shorts: a black variant and a white one, which he has already worn several times this season. "Let's settle this debate once and for all," wrote the Alpecin-Deceuninck team leader in his caption.

The responses poured in, and after 16 hours, the tally was 66 percent for white and 31 percent for black, from more than 45,000 responses. "No question," was the telling response from Jayco AlUla rider Luke Plapp, who competes in the Giro d'Italia as the Australian champion in a white pair of shorts. Van der Poel’s girlfriend also made it clear that she preferred the white variant.

Former racer Robbie McEwen had his theory ready for Van der Poel. "On a sunny day when you're in top form, white. But on a rainy day when you're not directly going for the win, then black," said the Aussie. Training partner Jordi Meeus then added a joke: "white, but it rusts faster..." quipped the sprinter from Lommel.

Sponsors Canyon and Alpecin also chimed in. Canyon commented that they are on team white shorts, while Alpecin prefers black for cyclocross. What it will ultimately be, we have to wait until the end of June: that's when Van der Poel will make his next appearance in the Tour de France.
