For three weeks now, we’ve been trying to pinpoint it. Was it his charisma in post-race interviews? His humor? His build? The fact that he also rides for UAE Team Emirates XRG? A striking video on Instagram finally settles the debate. This is why Isaac Del Toro has been reminding everyone of Tadej Pogacar throughout this Giro d’Italia.
Slovenian superstar Tadej Pogacar was once described by Tom Dumoulin as “a miner on a bike,” referring to his unusual time trial position that famously denied Dumoulin’s teammate Primoz Roglic the Tour de France title on the final day in 2020. In the years since, that style has become iconic. No one attacks with such sharpness, back arched, gaze often hidden behind oversized sunglasses, and the playful flair Pogi brings when he wins.
He has always been in a league of his own—until this Giro. Del Toro seems to have almost copied Pogacar’s style. Maybe it is just coincidence, or perhaps the world’s best rider has passed on a few tips. Watch Del Toro attack and you will see the same sharp punch, almost identical cadence. Throughout the Giro, Del Toro has confidently glanced back mid-effort to check on his rivals. Fittingly, it was Pogacar himself who called it “aura” on Instagram this past Wednesday.

Pogacar and Del Toro show striking similarities

In the video, which places Pogacar and Del Toro side by side in similar race moments, several striking parallels emerge beyond just their out-of-the-saddle efforts and sprint control. There’s the way Del Toro confidently navigates a technical finale with his hands firmly on the bars, his playful bow to the crowd in Milano-Torino, and again after his stage 17 win at the Giro. Pogacar pulled off that exact same move during the 2023 Tour de France.
The two are teammates, good friends, and clearly share a similar style on the bike. This past winter, Del Toro himself admitted he does not have the engine of his team leader (rumored to be 340 watts in zone 2). And while his positioning in the Giro has looked sharp, he was notably absent from Pogacar’s side in Milan San Remo after finding himself too far back. There is still plenty to learn, but no doubt Jonas Vingegaard will have done a double take watching Del Toro launch attacks in this Giro.
Not another one, he must have thought...
