A few hours after officially sealing his overall victory in the Vuelta a España, Jonas Vingegaard responded to his third Grand Tour win... this time in a somewhat strange setting in Madrid. The Danish rider from Visma | Lease a Bike was unable to celebrate with Spanish fans, as massive protests in the capital prevented the usual festivities. And Vingegaard was clearly disappointed by it. Of course, the two-time Tour de France winner already knew on Saturday that he had won the Vuelta. But he had been looking forward to the traditional celebration in Madrid, as he had enjoyed his Tour de France celebrations in Paris in 2022 and 2023. His disappointment was written all over his face when the peloton was stopped upon entering the city. The Vuelta was suddenly over.
The riders were brought back to their hotels, where teams had already made arrangements. Naturally, there was joy and reflection after three weeks of racing. “I’m super proud of this overall win, my first Vuelta and the third Grand Tour of my career,” Vingegaard said through Visma | Lease a Bike’s
official channels.

Jonas Vingegaard looked crestfallen in Madrid
Vingegaard reflects on a tough Vuelta a España
“It’s been three tough weeks. I felt very strong in the first week and managed to win twice,” he recalled. “Afterwards I had a more difficult phase, but luckily I came back during the final weekend. My stage win on Bola del Mundo gave me great satisfaction. It was a beautiful way to crown this Vuelta.”
That third stage win on Saturday was indeed the perfect ending, said team director Jesper Mørkøv. “Our guys have done an incredible job supporting Jonas these past weeks. He defended the leader’s jersey with conviction and proved once again that he was the strongest rider of this Vuelta. Three stage wins and now the overall: Jonas is a more than deserved winner.”

Vingegaard disappointed over cancellation of festivities in Madrid
The cancellation of the final stage hit the team emotionally. “It’s a pity that such a moment of eternity was taken from us. I was looking forward to celebrating this overall win with my team and the fans,” Vingegaard said. “Everyone has the right to protest, but it’s a shame that it has to happen here and prevents us from finishing the race.”
“Above all, I am very happy with and proud of this overall win. It’s sad that we and the fans were denied a beautiful finale in the heart of Madrid,” added CEO
Richard Plugge. “We will celebrate the red jersey with our team in our own way and honour this fantastic achievement,” the Dutchman announced. Visma | Lease a Bike went on to organize a
beautiful tribute for the winners, captured on camera by TV2.
