Denmark’s Thor Vangsø Nielsen endured a painful day during the third stage of the Tour of Denmark, won by Wout van Aert. The 20-year-old crashed heavily and was lying on the ground in considerable pain when he saw a Visma | Lease a Bike team car run over his Oakley sunglasses. At that moment, however, the young rider was mainly concerned with contacting his family and letting them know how he was doing.

Vangsø Nielsen came down hard during the third stage of his home race. While he was groaning in pain, the Visma | Lease a Bike car needed to pass him to continue following the peloton. The people inside apparently failed to spot the fallen rider’s glasses, which were lying some distance away from his head, and drove straight over them.

“We lost a pair of Oakleys,” Vangsø Nielsen’s team wrote jokingly in a social media post. Coincidentally, Oakley is a partner of Visma | Lease a Bike, so arranging a replacement pair for the Danish rider should normally not be too difficult.

Former professional rider and ex-Quick Step sports director Brian Holm later found Vangsø Nielsen in the grass following the high-speed crash. “When we arrived and saw Thor lying on the asphalt, the first thing he asked was whether he could borrow a phone to call his mother and tell her he was okay, despite having a dislocated or broken hip. Get well soon, Thor,” Holm wrote in his social media post.
