The participants in the Tour de France encountered heavy rain in the final stage of stage seventeen, which caused a crash at the start of the final kilometer. About fifteen riders hit the ground, with Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) suffering the worst injuries. Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) managed to stay upright and won the stage.
Girmay appeared to be the worst affected, and there were immediate fears that he had broken his collarbone, but according to his team, this is not the case.
“After their crashes, Louis Barré, Biniam Girmay, and Hugo Page received immediate medical attention after the stage,” said team doctor Benedikt Schäfer.
“They have sustained superficial injuries, but we have not identified any fractures or other serious injuries. However, given the impact, particularly that of Girmay, we will need to monitor his recovery closely.”
Cyril Barthe (Groupama-FDJ) also crossed the finish line injured, but for now, it appears he will be able to continue in the Tour.
