How do teams win prize money at the Tour de France

The first week of the Tour de France can already be lucrative for teams. Stage wins, sprint placing, classification jerseys and day-to-day results all bring in prize money, and it adds up quickly when a team places riders in the right moves from the opening stages.
That means the early days are often about more than just yellow jersey ambitions. A team can leave week one with a solid payday by chasing stage results, targeting intermediate sprints and fighting for bonus classifications, even if its overall contender is still waiting for the race to open up.

Tour de France prize money breakdown

A stage win in the Tour de France is worth €11,000, with prize money also paid down to 20th place on the stage. Teams can collect even when they do not take the victory. The first rider across the line in an intermediate sprint gets €1,500, while second and third take €1,000 and €500 respectively.

The jersey prizes also matter from the opening week. Riders earn €500 for every day in yellow, and €300 per day for wearing the green, polka-dot or white jersey. At the end of the race, the yellow jersey winner gets €500,000, while the green and polka-dot winners receive €25,000 each and the white jersey winner takes €20,000.
