Jonathan Milan is the dream athlete – always polite, always makes time for others, and on the bike, his sprinting is pure class to watch. But even the Italian can lose his temper sometimes, as we saw on camera during stage two of the Tour de France. Biniam Girmay became the target of some fiery frustration from his Italian rival. Luckily, the incident was met with good humor during and after the stage.
Milan was clearly hungry for points when the intermediate sprint approached on day two. The Lidl-Trek leader had missed out on the bunch sprint on stage one due to the echelons and was determined to grab the maximum amount of points for the green jersey classification this time. But he wasn’t the only one interested. Girmay, last year’s green jersey winner, was also in the mix. The Eritrean seemed to be riding on the wheels of two teammates and held his ground firmly when Milan tried to overtake.

Milan angry at Girmay, Intermarché-Wanty responds with humor

After narrowly winning the intermediate sprint, Milan immediately reacted towards Girmay, who was clearly just coasting down and unaware of any issue. Gesturing wildly and cursing, Milan let him know he wasn’t happy with Girmay’s move, as the Eritrean had given him a shoulder bump to hold his position in the run-up to the sprint. “He moved a bit to the right,” Milan said afterwards.
Intermarché-Wanty saw the humor in the heated situation and quickly posted a witty response. “Apparently Milan isn’t happy that Bini eats pineapple on pizza,” they wrote, sparking plenty of laughing reactions from other X users. Milan himself had calmed down after the stage: “It was nervous going into that sprint, but it’s all good. We respect each other, things like this just happen in a race.”

Milan knocks cell phone out of fan's hands

Aike Visbeek, Girmay’s team director, said after the stage that Milan had even apologized. “It’s all sorted,” said the Dutchman. The Belgian team had bigger concerns, as Girmay had slammed his knee against his handlebars in the finale. “So our main focus now is on his recovery.”
Milan’s finale wasn’t trouble-free either. While still in the front group, he had to swerve to avoid a fan filming with their phone by the roadside. The phone went flying several meters away, but Milan escaped unscathed. Later, however, the Italian dropped out of the group due to mechanical problems. “My chain wasn’t running smoothly, I couldn’t shift properly, but that’s just part of racing.”
