At 31, Adam Yates is trying something new: A different approach in the Tour of Switzerland time trial

Adam Yates is certainly making waves in the Tour of Switzerland. On the penultimate day, he was once again alert and ultimately even crowned the day's winner, after his master domestique and shadow leader Joao Almeida 'gifted' him the victory. With just one stage left, the overall victory seems almost secure for the Brit from UAE Team Emirates.

"He shows what a great person he is," the Brit praised his Portuguese teammate in the flash interview. Just like on Friday, Almeida proved his worth again. The Swiss time difference between the two intended Tadej Pogacar domestiques in the Tour de France stands at 31 seconds before Sunday's mountain time trial. "Personally, I expect Joao to put me at least a minute behind," predicted Simon's twin brother, anticipating that he would not be in yellow on Sunday afternoon.

"Expect to see him in this leader's jersey. He has shown how strong he is over the past few days. If he's alone in the time trial, he's going to fly," Yates continued to praise Almeida, whom he also called a good bloke.

"He's a good bloke. When we broke away together, he asked me what we were going to do. I asked if I could win, and he immediately said that was fine. It shows what a great person he is. He's a top teammate. He himself was also in great shape, so he could have won just as well. Credits to him for that."

Yates to try something new in time trial

At the press conference afterwards, Yates elaborated on his victory. "So far, it's been great in this Tour of Switzerland," concluded the rider, who also had his girlfriend and dog by his side after his victory. "Obviously, they can't always be here, so I really enjoy having them here with me."

"It was a very intense stage, where INEOS Grenadiers took charge early on. This allowed us to sit back and see what would happen," he continued. "Next comes the time trial, which is special: it will be the first time that I switch bikes in a race. So that's something new," he noted somewhat dryly.

"I expect a tough time trial anyway. It's not very steep, but it's still very challenging. My condition is good and I'm mainly focusing on putting in a strong performance myself," concluded Yates.
