Jonas Vingegaard tried on Saturday to test the legs of his main rival, Tadej Pogacar, in the Pyrenees, but ultimately lost a few seconds. Nevertheless, the Dane from Visma | Lease a Bike was satisfied with his day after losing considerable time on Hautacam a few days earlier. Vingegaard attacked twice in the last three kilometers, but in the final few hundred meters, he was countered by Pogacar. The Slovenian tried once himself, but couldn't break away from Vingegaard with that acceleration. In the end, he succeeded, increasing his lead to 4 minutes and 13 seconds.
“I expected Tadej to attack on the last climb,” the Dane told Eurosport, among others. “On the penultimate climb, they pushed hard, so I thought they wanted to go for the stage. On the final climb, I decided to go for it myself, because you have to try.”

Vingegaard compliments Arensman
“It felt like the time trial, so overall I'm very happy with how it went,” said an exhausted-looking Vingegaard after the final stage of a tough triptych in the mountains. “This is one of the hardest mountain stages I've ever done. It was very tough, but I'm sure everyone felt the same way. It was great to be able to ride the final climb like that.”
Visma | Lease a Bike had Simon Yates and Sepp Kuss in the breakaway, but ultimately, they were unable to do any work for their leader. “We actually wanted to go for the win with Simon and Sepp, but they couldn't keep up with Arensman,” said Vingegaard, who also had kind words for the day's winner: Thymen Arensman. “He rode well, especially on the last climb. Congratulations to him.”

Niermann not giving up yet
“We wanted to try and win from the breakaway,”
explained Head of Racing Grischa Niermann. “With Sepp and Simon up there, we were in a good position, but unfortunately they ran into a very strong Arensman. Jonas tried something late on and looked impressive,” said the German.
“Honestly, we expected UAE to go for the stage and attack, but in the end, it was Jonas who took the initiative. He’s very motivated and riding super strong. We know there’s one guy who’s a little better, but we won’t just settle for second place. There’s still plenty to fight for,” he said, sounding motivated.
