Cautious optimism for critically injured Caudell (19), but condition remains critical

Modern Adventure Pro Cycling has provided an encouraging update on Ezra Caudell. The 19-year-old American, who turned professional this year with George Hincapie's team, suffered life-threatening injuries in a crash at the Philadelphia Cycling Classic. There had been serious concerns over his condition, but Caudell is now awake, his team has confirmed.

Caudell was involved in a serious crash with 90 kilometers remaining in the American one-day race. He was left motionless after the accident and was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered that he had sustained life-threatening injuries. The crash was so severe that Milan Menten, who was also involved, later said he would seek professional help to process what he had witnessed.

Eleven days after the crash, Caudell's team has issued another update. His condition remains critical, but "he continues to show encouraging signs of progress," Modern Adventure wrote on Instagram. The 19-year-old remains on ECMO support while his lungs continue to heal, but on Thursday he was successfully weaned from deep sedation and taken off the ventilator. That allowed his family and medical team to gain a much clearer picture of his neurological condition and represented an important milestone in his recovery.

The team added that Caudell suffered significant injuries in the crash, including a concussion and severe chest trauma. His medical team remains focused on supporting his recovery from those injuries, but Modern Adventure said his progress over the past several days has been encouraging.

Shortly after waking, Caudell was already communicating with his teammates. Very much in keeping with his personality, the American quickly began making jokes and sending short videos to them. According to the team, his ability to interact, communicate and recognize the people around him has been an especially welcome and encouraging development after the enormous uncertainty of the previous 11 days.

Caudell's family remains at his bedside, vigilant and hopeful. He also remains very much in the thoughts of his Modern Adventure Pro Cycling teammates and staff, as well as friends and supporters throughout the cycling community. The team expressed its gratitude for the extraordinary level of support shown to Caudell and his family, while also thanking people for continuing to respect their privacy during an extremely difficult period.

The American team is aware that Caudell still faces a long road ahead and that his injuries remain extremely serious. Nevertheless, after the difficult days that followed his crash, there is now room for cautious optimism. "Important milestones still lie ahead," Modern Adventure stressed, but after an extraordinarily difficult 11 days, the team says there is now "genuine reason for hope" as Caudell begins his road to recovery.
