Richard Carapaz and his EF Education EasyPost teammates had a close call on the penultimate stage of the Giro d’Italia. The team misjudged a tricky corner but managed to brake just in time to avoid what could have been a nasty incident.
The incident took place with about 80 kilometers to go. EF Education EasyPost was leading the peloton on the descent of the Colle del Lys. While Kasper Asgreen managed to navigate a tricky corner cleanly, his teammates behind him were not so lucky. They misjudged the turn and had to slam on the brakes to stop just short of the guardrail, narrowly avoiding going off the road. GC contender Richard Carapaz, sitting second overall, also had to brake hard. Fortunately, all riders were able to breathe a sigh of relief.
Carapaz has big ambitions for stage 20 of the Giro. The Ecuadorian climber sits 43 seconds behind race leader Isaac Del Toro in the general classification. Carapaz looked stronger than the pink jersey on the stage after the rest day, clawing back a significant chunk of his deficit. However, in Friday’s mountain stage, the two appeared very evenly matched. The penultimate stage, featuring the iconic Colle delle Finestre in the finale, will be Carapaz’s last opportunity to launch a bid for overall victory.
