Remco Evenepoel was defeated in the time trial of the Vuelta a España by Filippo Ganna, with a 16-second difference separating the two. Evenepoel also struggled to gain a significant advantage over his closest competitors in the general classification. He commented, "I didn't have the best time trial legs today." "I'm quite satisfied with the time differences," Evenepoel expressed in his reaction on Eurosport. He managed to gain 1.13 minutes on
Sepp Kuss, who stood on the podium, 1.02 minutes on Jonas Vingegaard, and 20 seconds on Primoz Roglic. Notably, the modest time gain on Roglic left the Belgian slightly disappointed. In the overall classification, Evenepoel climbed to third place, trailing Kuss by 1.09 minutes.
"After ten kilometers, I faced a bit of a challenging moment," continued the world time trial champion. "That's where I lost some time to Ganna. If anyone deserves this victory, it's him. All in all, I can be satisfied with the overall result for the GC, but missing out on the stage win is regrettable." Nevertheless, Evenepoel remains optimistic, saying, "Having a stage win under my belt and finishing second twice in the first 10 days is not bad."
Evenepoel gains confidence from final stages: "We need to build on that"
"I also significantly closed the gap in the standings with Kuss. He delivered a truly impressive time trial performance, so kudos to him for that," Evenepoel expressed his admiration for the American rider. "They probably instructed him to give it his all since they want to maintain their strategy with the three leaders. He performed excellently, and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw his result."
"Nevertheless, the Vuelta is still a long race, and numerous opportunities lie ahead. We'll be going all out for it. I've shown a strong performance today and last weekend. We need to capitalize on that," Evenepoel concluded with determination. Wednesday's stage in the Vuelta features mostly flat terrain, but the uphill finish raises questions about its suitability for the general classification contenders.
