Remco Evenepoel managed to win the European Cycling Championships in impressive fashion on Sunday, but it was a very close call. According to reports, the margin between him and second-place finisher Giulio Ciccone at the finish line was just three millimetres—or 0.000234 seconds.

Evenepoel made a breakaway in the final stretch, but a silly crash on an uphill turn set him back a bit. A little later, he found himself at the front with the only rider who had been able to keep up with him: Giulio Ciccone.

Words exchanged between Italian director and Evenepoel

Since Christian Scaroni—another Italian—was chasing the duo on his own, the Italian car, with technical director Roberto Amadio, pulled up alongside them. He instructed Ciccone to stop working with Evenepoel.
The Belgian was obviously frustrated by this. Clearly shown on camera, the Belgian made his feelings known to Amadio, but Amadio didn’t budge.

“We rode our race. He can get as angry as he wants. The guys stuck to the plan, so there’s nothing to complain about,” he told bici.pro.

Ciccone on not riding with Evenepoel at the European Championships

In the end, it came down to a photo finish between the two, with Ciccone just falling short. He did, however, prove himself to be a gracious loser afterward.
“First of all, I want to say: congratulations to Remco. He’s incredibly strong, and I also had a bit of luck with the situation in the race, with Scaroni behind us. So I took advantage of the situation to get on his wheel.”

"I understand that it wasn't a favourable situation for him in the lead group, but well, that's just part of the race," said the Italian.
Evenepoel himself said afterwards he was pleased with his collaboration with Ciccone, who did take the lead from the eventual winner in the final kilometres.
