Jay Vine crash adds to UAE concerns ahead of Vuelta as Pellizzari and Gall celebrate in Burgos

Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) won the final stage of the Tour of Burgos atop Lagunas de Neila. Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) secured overall victory, while Jay Vine (UAE Emirates-XRG) crashed during the stage.

As has become tradition, the Tour of Burgos once again concluded at Lagunas de Neila, and 2026 was no different. The six-kilometer climb, averaging 9.9 percent, provided an ideal test ahead of the climbs that await later this month at the Vuelta a España. In many editions, the winner of this final stage has also gone on to claim the overall title.

Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) started the day in the yellow leader's jersey after winning stage three, but his advantage over Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) and Oscar Onley (Netcompany INEOS) remained relatively small at six and seven seconds respectively. Jarno Widar (Lotto-Intermarché), who had finished fourth on stage two, did not take the start because he was suffering from an infection.

Luke Tuckwell of Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, 12th in the general classification and runner-up at this year's Tour Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, was another non-starter. Several more riders abandoned during the stage, including David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Josh Burnett (Burgos-BH) and Michael Leonard (EF Education-EasyPost).

That was partly the consequence of a rapid opening to the stage, with attacks coming one after another. It was only after the halfway point that a serious breakaway of 15 riders finally established itself, featuring the likes of Milan Vader (Pinarello-Q36.5), Igor Arrieta and Kevin Vermaerke (UAE Emirates-XRG), and Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious).

The peloton, controlled by Decathlon and INEOS, refused to give the breakaway much room. That prompted Sivakov to try to bridge across for UAE, while his teammate Jay Vine crashed and was left behind with injuries. It was another unwelcome development ahead of Tadej Pogačar's Vuelta a España, after João Almeida had already been forced to abandon the Tour de Pologne a day earlier.

Vine's teammates Sivakov and Vermaerke, together with young Nield Driesen (Lotto-Intermarché), continued to fly the flag at the front as the race approached the final climb, but they were fighting a losing battle. Driesen impressively held on the longest, but with three kilometers remaining he too was caught.

On the steepest sections, Leo Bisiaux set the pace for race leader Gall. Ciccone and Gall followed, producing a repeat of the scenario seen on stage three. However, the pair repeatedly eased off, allowing Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), Enric Mas (Movistar) and Mathys Rondel (Tudor) to work their way back into contention for the stage win.

Pellizzari took advantage by launching an acceleration, although the same familiar names eventually emerged behind him once again. This time, however, they came just too late to bring back the Italian from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe, who held on to take the victory at Lagunas de Neila.
