The GP Québec eventually ended in a sprint of a favorite group (consisting of about 35 men), with Michael Matthews as the final winner. In the top five, there were also two Visma | Lease a Bike riders, Tiesj Benoot and Per Strand Hagenes, who finished in fourth and fifth, respectively. And, of course, the killer bees could live with that!
First, Matteo Jorgenson played a leading role on behalf of the yellow-black formation. On the local loop in Quebec, the good climbing American took off just on a bit of a descent, after which Julian Alaphilippe and Tadej Pogacar joined him. The attack attempt eventually failed, but the tone seemed to be set. However, the whole bunch got back together and thus sprinted with the result as mentioned above.
Benoot tried with late all-or-nothing attempt
"This was a really strong race from the team," Benoot told the team website of his breadlord in a comment. "When Matteo launched his attack, it created a great situation for us. We were able to sit back and let it play out. I didn’t want to start my sprint too early because of the headwind. Suddenly I saw Matthews start his sprint, and I felt like I still had something left, so I decided to go for it. Unfortunately, my effort stalled about a hundred meters from the line."
"I think I could have finished on the podium if I had stayed in the slipstream a little longer, but I chose to go all-in. Per also managed to sprint well behind le. I think we can be satisfied with having two riders in the top five. This strong team performance gives us confidence heading into the GP de Montréal on Sunday." In the GP Montréal, there will be even more altimeters to climb, which may sound pretty good to Visma | LaB riders Benoot and Jorgenson....
