Matthew Brennan takes Vuelta confidence from dominant Visma one-two in Burgos

Follow us on GoogleThe opening stage of the Tour of Burgos was held on Tuesday, and it proved perfectly suited to Visma | Lease a Bike. The Dutch team secured a commanding one-two through Matthew Brennan and Ben Tulett after controlling the peloton throughout the day. Unsurprisingly, there was plenty of satisfaction within the team afterwards.

“The boys rode really well for me today. Steven Kruijswijk controlled the race all day, which was great to see. It gave me the confidence that we could finish it off,” Brennan said through the team’s official channels. The Brit timed his effort perfectly in the final kilometre.
“Ben was ahead of me in the finale and kept the pace high. Everything was under control. After the final corner, I went all-out, and I’m really happy that it worked. All the boys were delighted. It was a really strong team performance.”
Brennan will begin his first Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España, in two and a half weeks. “This gives me a lot of confidence for the Vuelta and shows that I can also take my opportunities on difficult finishes,” he said after winning on the uphill final kilometre in Burgos.

Visma | Lease a Bike: ‘We were the favourites, and it showed’
“We were the favourites today, and it showed. Every team was looking at us, and it was our responsibility to keep the breakaway under control,” sports director Maarten Wynants explained.
“In the end, the boys finished it off perfectly. It was a hectic finale in which positioning was extremely important, as were strong legs. It was a very impressive one-two today,” concluded the Dutch team’s sports director, with a hilly second stage awaiting the riders on Wednesday.

- I appreciate the need for rigorous drug testing, especially given the sports' abusive and extensive history with banned substances. - I suggest that the contract discussions have been put off not because Del Toro and his representitives expect UAE to sign Seixas, which I consider highly unlikely, but rather because he and his reps don't want to set a ceiling on a new contract until they see the size and length of Seixas' deal. - No disrespect toward Jonas, but his problem, vis-a-vis Tadej, may not be solvable. Tadej didn't only excell in explosiveness, he also demolished Jonas on a crucial descent. And, lest we forget, Pogi didn't have any trouble winning both the Giro and the Tour last year. Moreover, his explanation regarding poor planning by the Visma team, also strikes me as questionable, given all the experience and expertise in the Visma group.
