Shortly after the conclusion of the second individual time trial, narrowly won by Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), news emerged that the 'Cannibal of Schepdaal' had tested positive for COVID-19 and, as a result, had withdrawn from the race. As the coverage understandably focused mainly on everything related to Evenepoel's setback on Sunday evening, another interesting news item was somewhat overshadowed.
A cycling fan posted a visual comparison on Twitter between Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Evenepoel, who ultimately finished seventeen seconds faster than his Slovenian opponent. The two photos show both riders riding under the flamme rouge. What stands out is that the motorbike in front of Roglic was noticeably close to him, while the motorbike in front of Evenepoel appeared to be miles away in that respect.
Furthermore, it is difficult to assess how much of an advantage the former ski jumper gained from the "incident." It is therefore unlikely that this kind of story will have further consequences, although it will likely continue to be discussed in many cycling chat groups, especially since former professional cyclist Philippe Gilbert (who is now a cycling analyst at Eurosport) also got involved in the debate. "I didn't dare say it during the live broadcast to avoid sounding pro-Belgian, but it is a real scandal," the Walloon tweeted, using a significant number of exclamation marks.
