Tadej Pogacar crossed the line smiling, as his teammate and good friend Tim Wellens won stage 15 of the Tour de France. The Slovenian rider from UAE Team Emirates-XRG got through the day just fine, avoided a crash in the opening phase, and is on the mend from some recent throat and nasal issues. That’s also why he was able to stay calm, even when he accidentally ended up in the breakaway.
"I'm really happy for Tim, even happier than when I win myself," Pogacar began in his daily flash interview as the overall race leader. "It was amazing to hear on the radio over the last 45 kilometers that he kept gaining time on the chasers. I'm impressed by how he rode, chapeau to him. He deserves this."
Because Wellens has a special place in Pogacar’s heart, ever since they became teammates in 2023. "Tim is one of the best teammates I’ve ever had. He sacrifices so much for me throughout the year, even in the Classics and in his favorite races. He always gives everything for the team’s goals. But today, he got his chance and he took it. Tim proved today that he’s a true champion."

Pogacar struggled with throat and nose complaints

As for Pogacar himself: the yellow jersey wearer got through the day just fine, even though he's been sniffling a bit. "I'm super happy about the rest day, I can't wait to recover a little. Do I feel better already? I don’t know. Honestly, it feels like more than half the peloton is riding around with a sore throat and a blocked nose. I’ve been one of them, for a few days now, actually."
That won’t be good news for his rivals, especially considering how dominant Pogacar has looked in the Pyrenees recently. In the press conference, he even said he’s starting to feel better. "I think we just eat too much ice cream and put ice in everything. That’s not the best for your throat. And the air conditioning, plus all the extra work on the podium after the stages, it all adds up to a stuffy nose and a bit of coughing," he said, according to Velo.

Pogacar is ready for battle with Jonas Vingegaard

After a rest day on Monday, there are still six stages left on the schedule starting Tuesday. Pogacar says he’s ready. "Of course, I want to keep this yellow jersey and bring it to Paris. That’s going to be tough. I’m ready for the fight, because Jonas looked really strong on Saturday. I’m not necessarily dreaming of certain stages, but let’s see how the race unfolds. It’s mainly about the jersey."
